Bishop’s Hatfield Girls’ School continues to be an outstanding school.

Ofsted 2022

Our school vision is based on four key goals:

Excellent Teaching
By enthusiastic and inspirational staff in stimulating and creative lessons with high expectations for all.

Academic Success
In a supportive learning environment enabling students to achieve their potential and that values knowledge, skills and character.

Personal Development
By upholding the school’s values and celebrating diversity in extensive extra-curricular activities which encourages responsible risk-taking and prepares for the challenges ahead.

Strong Leadership
Promoting high standards of behaviour, securing and ensuring efficient and effective use of resources and engaging the whole school community and beyond.

The Bishop’s 360

Illustrates the purpose of our curriculum and demonstrates our commitment to developing the whole person through development of skills, knowledge and character. At its heart are our core values which provide a guide to how we behave and the decisions we make.

Pupils leave as well-rounded individuals. They relish the opportunity to embody ‘Bishop’s 360 values’, which include kindness, ambition and teamwork. Pupils flourish, and support each other to succeed.

Thrive Academically

Benefit from outstanding teaching by subject specialists

When you study at Bishop’s, you will be supported by enthusiastic and skilled teachers who are specialists in their subject areas. We encourage students to take risks, challenge themselves, but most of all enjoy their learning. Our lessons spark curiosity and interest. Our staff are relentless in their support for students, providing regular feedback to support progress and providing academic challenge.

Join one of the top performing sixth forms in Hertfordshire

We are really proud of our outstanding A level and BTEC results. The most recent Department for Education data (for 2023 exam results) put Bishop’s in the top 10% of schools in the country for A Level results and this rises to the top 6% of schools when looking at students’ ‘best 3’ A Level subjects. By this measure, Bishop’s is in the top 8 state schools in Hertfordshire, with most of the schools above us either selective or partially selective in their intake.

In 2023, 34.3% of grades were A/A*, and 61.8% were A*- B. 16 of last years’ Year 13 students got 3 or more A*/A grades. Unlike many of the other schools that achieve these sorts of results, our entrance criteria for sixth form means we welcome students with a range of abilities, and all make significant progress.

These results enable our students to go on to study at Oxbridge and the top Russell Group universities in the country and in some of the most competitive courses, including medicine and veterinary medicine. All of our students who wanted to go to university secured a place at their chosen destination. Some students have won places on prestigious apprenticeship schemes.

The sixth form timetable is organised in blocks for optimum subject choice flexibility.

Most subjects are offered at Bishop’s, but there is also the option of studying subjects at another school in our Welwyn Hatfield sixth form consortium. Students who choose to study a subject at one of our partner schools tell us they enjoy the opportunity to make new friends and experience a different educational environment.

In addition to A levels and BTECs, Bishop’s offers the option of taking Mathematical Studies Level 3 (Core Maths). This is a useful career springboard for those not studying Mathematics at A level and is attractive to many universities who will offer a lower entrance grade requirement.

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is also available and is great for building independent research and project management skills. Again, universities will reduce their offer for candidates who are working towards this qualification.

Personal Tutoring

Develop with comprehensive personal tutoring support

One of the unique aspects of our sixth form is the level of guidance and support we offer each student throughout their time in the sixth form. Every student has a personal tutor whom they meet fortnightly for individualised support with their academic progress, pastoral matters and with accessing wider opportunities. This is a key part of our character development programme.

Take on responsibility in a leadership role

Taking on leadership roles and positions of responsibility is an important part of being a sixth-former at Bishop’s and nearly all our students take up these opportunities to develop their skills and talents. Roles are available at different levels with our student leadership structure. Examples include:

  • Head Student

This is the most senior role and involves working closely with the senior leadership team to run the School Council, oversee prefects and represent the school. There are also opportunities to support younger pupils, such as through mentoring, sustainability initiatives or enrichment activities.

  • Senior Prefect

Leading and supporting school activities and younger pupils as Anti-bullying Leaders, Events Ambassadors, Sustainability Champions, Sixth Form Transition Leaders.

  • Academic/Pastoral Prefect

Mentoring GCSE pupils or supporting younger years with Maths or Literacy activities; supporting new Year 7 in their transition to secondary school or acting as personal coaches.

  • Subject Prefect

Representing specific subjects (e.g. Science, Languages, Library) at school events and providing support within that Department, e.g. in enrichment and sporting clubs.

  • House Captain and Vice-Captain

Inspiring younger pupils to get involved in House events as well as supporting the organisation of these activities.

Careers Support

Receive excellent support for university, apprenticeship and job applications.

We provide personalised support for our sixth-formers through the one to one tutor system and the life skills programme. Students have individual conversations with their tutor on a fortnightly basis and this includes support with researching courses and universities, using specialist tools such as Unifrog and the techniques needed to make a strong and successful application.

Our life skills programme covers every aspect of applying to university as well as useful topics such as building a CV, financial management and maintaining good mental health.

Additional support includes our programme of super-curricular events for all, and the dedicated Masterminds Programme, aimed at those applying for the most competitive courses.

Increasing numbers of students are applying for apprenticeships in top level companies, and our strong links with employment networks mean that we are able to support students through the steps of the application process.

Bishop’s sixth form has granted me access to many opportunities which have been the seeds to my success. Through taking on responsibilities and volunteering, I have been able to make an impact on younger pupils and act as a role model.

Amélie, Year 13

Enrichment

We have an extensive programme of enrichment to ensure that our students enjoy life within and outside their curriculum-based work.

This includes the opportunity to take part in or run thriving societies, clubs and competitions, expeditions through World Challenge, a community volunteering programme, and an extensive range of guest speakers’ talks, trips and visits. Students have also been very successful in their Young Enterprise Company programme, achieving awards for team work and product design. The opportunity to undertake extended work experience in Year 12, and support in finding placements and appropriate programmes, university residential courses and summer schools is always welcomed by our students. Curriculum related activities include visiting speakers, master classes, field courses, and theatre and museum visits, as well as residential trips.

Former students/alumni offer support through the Future First network, giving additional insight opportunities to network and gain experience with female leaders across a range of industries.

Inclusion

How will I know if this is the right sixth form for me?

We are an inclusive, happy place to study with a diverse student body. The majority of our Year 11 students stay with us for their post-16 studies for an uninterrupted 7 year education journey.
We welcome many external students each year, who choose our sixth form for its excellent reputation, strong results and inclusive environment. Our Sixth Form is open to both boys as well as girls and we are proud of our commitment to Equality and Diversity amongst the student body.

Moving from Year 11 into sixth form was a big step, including taking personal ownership of my studies, as well as wider responsibilities. My tutor supported me every step of the way and has given me invaluable advice to achieve this.

Harry, Year 12

Modern Sixth Form Facilities

Study in State-Of-The-Art Surroundings

Our students enjoy cutting-edge facilities including flood WiFi within a spacious and bright building which was recently designed around the needs of learners today. The sixth form has its own Café and Study Room for use throughout the school day, including before and after school, and access to school meeting spaces for small group work. The sixth form also benefits from its own outdoor seating area and lawn.

The school premises boast purpose-built art and design, music and ICT suites, as well as a drama studio and a dance studio. Our school library offers a wide range of excellent reference resources and IT desktops. Whilst in school, students can borrow chromebooks for use in lessons or for private study. Although our building is only 7 years old, we are currently investing in further improvements to benefit our growing sixth form.
